Purpose and Objectives 目的和目标

This Chinese PhD program is intended to equip candidates for careers in theological education and research for churches in China and the broader Sinophone world. The Chinese PhD (Theological Studies) in particular provides candidates with the advanced knowledge and skills needed to research, write, and make a scholarly contribution to the field of Theological Studies.

Upon successfully completing the Chinese PhD (Theological Studies), candidates will:

Achievement of these objectives will be evaluated through the production and defense of the candidate’s original work of academic research (90,000-110,000 words in English or 135,000-165,000 words in Chinese), which will be directed by a specialist in the candidate’s chosen field of study jointly appointed by the institute and CBS.

The Theological Studies program encompasses the broad areas of Historical Theology, Systematic Theology, and Apologetics. Candidates in this program may choose to focus their research in any of the areas of theological studies, including history of doctrine, theological doctrine, theological method, apologetics, and ethics. Their objective is to make an original and significant contribution to their area of study and, as a result, contribute to the understanding of a theologically-informed biblical worldview. The contribution, to be presented in the form of a doctoral dissertation, must show considerable engagement with Sinophone theology and issues in Chinese churches, broadly understood.

During their first two years of study, PhD candidates also meet program requirements in two theological research languages related to their dissertation topic. Candidates enrolled through this program must demonstrate reading comprehension in two languages other than the language in which they are writing their dissertations (see notes under “Completion Requirements” and “Program Design” below).

In addition to the general admission requirements of Chinese PhD programs at the institute, applicants must meet the following requirements in order for their applications to be considered by the admissions committee.

Residency and Transfer Policy 驻校和转学分政策

Candidates are not required to study in residence. The initial three seminars are delivered online and candidates enrolled in courses offered in English have the option to complete their grading items (assignments, tests, exams and papers) in Chinese to be evaluated by instructors appointed by the institute. The dissertation writing process is an independent research experience with a specialist, jointly approved and appointed by the institute and CBS, in the student’s chosen field of study.

A candidate may transfer in up to 6 hours, if he/she can demonstrate completion of the equivalent of THE 9200 Issues and Methods and/or THE 9400 Principles of Teaching, Learning, and Course Design.

  • Successful completion of all required hours of specified coursework with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and with a grade of B or higher for all seminars

* Research Language I and II Prerequisites: candidates must demonstrate competency in an approved theological research language (usually German, French, or Latin). The competency can be demonstrated by taking an approved course at another institution and passing that course or by taking a proficiency exam administered by CIU. For candidates whose native language is not English, satisfactory English proficiency test results (see “General Admission Requirements” under “General Information”) may be used to satisfy the Research Language I requirement upon the written consent of the doctoral mentor. Native English speakers enrolled in the Chinese program are normally expected to use Chinese as either Research Language I or II. Applicants are strongly encouraged to complete the research language requirements as soon as possible. Candidates in the program will not be allowed to take Dissertation Research and Writing I (THE 9901) until the Research Language I prerequisite (i.e., a language other than English and Chinese) has been met.

**Comprehensive Knowledge Review: candidates must demonstrate familiarity with concentration-specific knowledge areas. They demonstrate their familiarity during tutorial discussions with their dissertation mentors. They will not be allowed to take Dissertation Research and Writing V (THE 9905) until they meet this prerequisite.

Program Design 项目设计

The Chinese PhD in Theological Studies consists of 45 semester hours of study. The program is designed so that candidates who pursue their research and writing at the pace of 6 credits each semester should be able to complete their degrees in three years. Candidates who pursue their research and writing at the pace of 3 credits each semester should be able to complete their degrees in five years. If candidates extend their studies beyond the planned timeframe, they will pay a continuation fee for each semester they remain in the program. The foundational courses are offered in English, but candidates have the option of completing the required grading items (tests and assignments) in either English or Chinese.

Tuition 学费

The tuition fee for the Chinese PhD (Theological Studies) is US$530/credit; each course is usually between 3 and 6 credits, and the annual tuition may be adjusted.

Zhiqiu Xu (PhD, Boston University) joined the faculty of CIU’s Seminary & School of Ministry in 2014, currently serving as Associate Professor of Theology and Director of the Chinese Seminary Studies program. He is the author of Natural Theology Reconfigured: Confucian Axiology and American Pragmatism (Ashgate) and a number of published works. He teaches courses in systematic theology and Reformed theology, and specializes in the areas of constructive theology and philosophical theology (theology and Chinese philosophy).

徐志秋（波士顿大学哲学博士）于2014年加入CIU神学院和事工学院，目前担任神学副教授和中文神学院研究项目主任。他著有《Natural Theology Reconfigured: Confucian Axiology and American Pragmatism》（Ashgate出版），并发表了多部作品。他教授系统神学和改革宗神学课程，专攻建构神学和哲学神学（神学和中国哲学）领域。


Ximian Xu (PhD, Edinburgh), known as Simeon, is IASH-CTPI Duncan Forrester Fellow, 2023 in the University of Edinburgh, working on a research project titled “Watching in Justice: Cultivating Justice in Surveillance Society.” From September 2021 to August 2023, he served as Kenneth and Isabel Morrison Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Theology and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence at the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh. He is a founding editor of Studies in Dutch Neo-Calvinism Series (Chinese). Simeon’s most recent monograph is Theology as the Science of God: Herman Bavinck’s Wetenschappelijke Theology for the Modern World (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 2022). His postdoctoral research involved the preparation of a monograph on theological analysis of ethical issues related to AI, which is contracted with Routledge. Simeon’s main research interests lie in Dutch Neo-Calvinism (especially Abraham Kuyper and Herman Bavinck), contextual theology (especially Sino-Reformed theology), theology and technology ethics (especially AI, trans/post-humanism).

Yonghua Ge (PhD, University of Cambridge) is a Faraday Associate at the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, University of Cambridge, a member of the Editorial Board of Regent Review of Christian Thought, and a reviewer for Sino-Christian Studies.

Dr. Ge has a passion to develop leaders and educators who are theologically equipped and committed to the church in China and around the world. His education has spanned the globe, from Shanghai to Cambridge, from Toledo to Vancouver. One of his key academic interests is the doctrine of creation and its relation to medieval theology and ancient Chinese philosophy.

葛拥华（剑桥大学哲学博士）是剑桥大学法拉第科学与宗教研究所客座研究员，《Science and Religion》编委成员，中原大学《汉语基督教学术评论》评委。

Andrew Loke (PhD, King’s College London) is an Associate Professor (tenured) in the Department of Religion and Philosophy, as well as a research Fellow of the Centre for Sino-Christian Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Dr. Loke has published multiple books with world-leading academic publishers in peer-reviewed monograph series in the fields of theology, philosophy of religion, historical-critical New Testament studies, and science and religion. These include The Origins of Divine Christology (Cambridge University Press), A Kryptic Model of the Incarnation (Routledge), Investigating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ (Routledge), God and Ultimate Origins (Springer Nature), The Teleological and Kalam Cosmological Arguments Revisited (Springer Nature), The Origin of Humanity: Science and Theology in Conversation (T&T Clark), and Evil, Sin and Christian Theism (Routledge), as well as the Chinese-language books, such as Debating the Christian Faith (Tien Dao Publish House), and Theology: The Big Questions (Tien Dao Publish House), and the list goes on.

In addition, he has published numerous articles in leading international peer-reviewed journals such as Religious Studies (Cambridge University Press) and Journal of Theological Studies (Oxford University Press). In addition to HKBU, he has taught at the University of Hong Kong, Singapore Bible College, and Regent College Vancouver, and given talks at universities and churches around the world.

His areas of specialty include: Theology and religious studies, Science and religion, Philosophy of religion.
